The Original Raging Grannies, Victoria, B.C. The first group to call themselves "Raging Grannies" sprouted in the winter of 1986-87 in Victoria, British Columbia. Several peace activists who had been doing street theatre began dressing up in outrageous hats and singing satirical songs to protest against nuclear vessels entering Canadian waters. Encouraged by positive media response, the eight original Grannies went on to challenge other societal problems. These included uranium mining, racism, militarism, clear-cut logging and corporate greed. Success came quickly and before long there were groups in Kamloops, Toronto, Ottawa, Woodstock, Montreal and Halifax.<<BACK to Montreal Grannies' History |
