Starting your own Raging Grannies group

1. Bring together a group of five or more women:
-It's not necessary to be a grandmother or be a good singer. All you need is a lot of spunk, a belief in change and an open mind!
-Treasure the wide ranges of colour, size, ethnicity and age of women's face.
-It helps to have at least one good singer who can be the song leader, and who can introduce the songs.
-Make a "Grannies" sign to bring to all performances.
-Designate one Granny to be the "Booking Granny" to eliminate the possibility of double booking.

2. Dress for the part:
-Check out your closet or thrift stores for crazy hats, shoes and a "granny costume". The more colourful and outrageous, the better: try flowers, buttons, boas, frills, shawls, and wild outfits.

3. Find songs to sing, then practise, practise, practise!
-The Victoria Raging Grannies have published a songbook, but there are many more recent songs available. Just contact any Granny group and see what they have - Grannies love to share their songs!
-Try writing your own songs - funny and satirical songs are great, when possible and appropriate.
-It helps if everybody knows five or six songs well - you can usually wing it with the rest.
-Pitchpipes come in handy to start the group on the same note.
-Practise! Many Grannies find they practise at least once or twice a month - or more if there are several gigs coming up.
-When singing, be certain to look up from your music and make eye contact with your audience. Sing loudly and clearly. Smile!

4. Keep in touch:
-Have a telephone tree to keep in touch with everyone in your group.
-Keep in regular contact with other Granny groups.
-Submit reports about your activities to the Granny Grapevine publication -if you can, come on out to the biannual national "Unconvention" - it takes place in Canada, but American Grannies are invited too. These meetings are smashing!
