History

The Montreal Raging Grannies were formed in 1989 at the start of the Gulf War when they appeared at an Armed Forces Recruitment Centre in order to sign up. A few new members were added for an Earth Day demonstration – and the group was born. There about a dozen and a half women in the group ranging in age from 55 to 90 and representing diverse backgrounds. They are politically motivated although non-partisan. Many of the members have been long time activists in the Women's Peace Movement. Members share the common belief that human conflict can and must be solved through peaceful means rather than war and violence. After witnessing the endless repetition of history the time was ripe to initiate new strategies – those that incorporated humour and fun with political action.

The impetus for starting the Montreal group came from a group of women in Victoria, B.C. Incensed by Canadian acquiescence in allowing American ships with nuclear capability to pass through Canadian waters, the women joined a Greenpeace demonstration on board the Rainbow Warrior. The group attracted media attention by wearing granny-style clothes and eye-catching hats.

The Montreal Grannies have raised their voices in what is loosely described as song at a variety of venues where their opinions need to be heard. They participate at government hearings, in educational programs in schools and colleges, in presentations to community groups and at countless marches and demonstrations. In recognition of their outstanding contribution as peacemakers, the group was awarded the 2001 YMCA Canada Peace Medal.

Considered by some to be a "social movement," the Raging Grannies have spread to more than 35 Canadian cities, have crossed the border and even oceans. Ralph Nader considers the Raging Grannies to be among the best of all Canadian imports!

The Montreal Grannies recently supported the formation of a francophone granny group appropriately named " Les Mémés déchaînées." Women interested in starting sister groups are urged to contact Barbara Seifred at 481 6435.

The Montreal Raging Grannies rage where and when the issues get hot, and whether they are welcomed or not!
